WinXP Sytem File Checker
Yes windows XP still supports SFC (System File Checker)!!! Yeah ....
When Windows XP becomes unstable due to a virus or other infection it is important to verify that the System files are intact. I like to run SFC after I have removed an infection to be sure that the system will be trustworthy.
System File Checker gives a user the ability to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder (%Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache) or the Windows installation source files (CD), and then replaces the incorrect file. System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker. If the cache folder becomes damaged or unusable, you can use the sfc /scannow, the sfc /scanonce, or the sfc /scanboot commands to repair its contents.
To run.... Click on the Run box and type Command, a DOS box will open, then type sfc /scannow. A GUI Window=s box will open and SFC will start checking the Windows protected files on your computer. If corrupted, incorrect version or missing files are detected, SFC will prompt you to enter the correct CD. Note: this can take up to 30 minutes!
Options.... SFC has several switches
/scannow Scans all system files immediatly and updates the /system32/dllcache folder
/scanonce Scans all system files on next boot and updates the /system32/dllcache folder
/purgecache purges the SFC cache & scans all system files & updates the /system32/dllcache folder
After completion, reboot several times to make sure that the OS is stable. If you have any question concerning SFC contact me in the members section, User name is cpumech!
